We were happy to see ASTAIR (Auto-Steer Taxi at Airport) the SESAR exploratory research project led by ENAC, represented at the Fly AI Forum 2025, held on 22–23 April at EUROCONTROL Headquarters in Brussels.
Organised with the support of key institutional and industrial stakeholders - including the European Commission, EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency, SESAR Joint Undertaking JU, International Air Transport Association (IATA), and CANSO - the Forum brought together the aviation community to explore the evolving role of artificial intelligence in aviation, from machine learning to generative AI. It offered a valuable opportunity to share insights from recent workshops and engage in forward-looking discussions on human-AI teaming in operational environments.
ASTAIR was featured in the “Societal and Human Aspects” session, with a presentation by Mathieu Cousy (ENAC), project coordinator.
What is ASTAIR?
ASTAIR aims to develop a support tool for supervised, fully automated taxiing operations, with the ambition to:
- Improve predictability
- Strengthen human - automation collaboration
- Promote more sustainable airport ground operations
ENAC not only coordinates the project but also contributes to the design of human–machine interfaces (HMI) and the integration into real-time simulations to validate the concept.
Building on the foundations laid by the SESAR AEON Project, ASTAIR continues to advance automation in aviation with a human-centred approach.
