Training tomorrow’s air traffic controllers also means anticipating the technological evolutions that are transforming their profession. This is the ambition of Project VISTA, launched last June by the ENAC ATM department.
The current situation
Our approach and tower simulators currently rely on systems identical to those deployed in operational environments.
An advantage in terms of realism, but also some limitations:
- Complex to implement and update in a training context,
- No flexibility to evolve the systems according to pedagogical needs,
- And above all, no possibility to experiment with a Stripless HMI, which is progressively becoming a standard in ATC training (cf. ACS Stripless and Basic Surv projects).
Our objectives
- 2026: provide radar images and safety nets at the level of operational standards,
- 2027: integrate a Stripless functionality directly into the Scansim simulator (Approach/Tower tool at ENAC).
Next steps
A first test platform will be set up within a month to assess Scansim’s current limits and initiate the required upgrades.
With VISTA, ENAC reaffirms its commitment to:
- Providing student controllers with a state-of-the-art training environment,
- Preparing the future of air traffic operations,
- And contributing to the major transformations in air traffic management.
This project is part of our broader program to modernize ATC practical training, ensuring that ENAC remains a leader in this field.
